Syracuse University’s English Language Institute (ELI) provides intensive English language instruction to international students and visiting professionals at all levels of proficiency. Students receive the preparation they need to study at a U.S. University, and professionals gain the skills needed to advance in the global business environment.
The ELI’s 30-year record of success reflects a personalized, interactive approach, which builds confidence through feedback as skills improve. Spend 20-30 hours each week in small classes of intensive study. The attention of master’s level faculty ensures long-term benefits.
- Fall and spring terms are 15 weeks x 20 contact hours = 300 instructional hours.
- Summer sessions are 6 weeks x 25 contact hrs = 150 instructional hours. Students must attend two summer sessions to complete a level.

The ELI meets the English language needs of its students by offering programs that recognize the reasons for which individuals seek to enhance their English language skills, and designing courses to meet those needs, whether they be academic, professional, technological, social, or cultural.
