Internship Application

Students are advised of the following:
The Legal Studies Program has two types of internships available:
1. A voluntary internship for certificate students
2. A required internship for degree students

The voluntary internship program is designed to enable certificate students to obtain experience and exposure in a legal setting. There are no required hours (only suggested), it is usually unpaid, students do not register or pay tuition for it, no credit is given, and it does not appear on the student transcript. Generally students would do an internship towards the end of the program, or even after the program was over. Students are advised to contact the program office if interested in this internship.

An internship class (LGL 471) is required of all degree students in their senior year. While the goal of the internship is similar to the voluntary program, there are several important differences. There are required hours on the job in addition to classroom instruction. It is a three-credit course, it will be graded, and it will appear on the student transcript.

Application Requirements:
Students wishing to participate in an internship must:
1. Fill out the enclosed application form.
2. Attach an updated resume, writing sample and letter of intention.
3. Read A Guide to a Successful Legal Internship by Heidi Nasheri and Peter Christopher Kratcoski (Anderson Publishing) Chapter 7: Ethics and Professionalism and sign the attached affirmation. The booklet is located in the research library at the Syracuse University Legal Studies Program office.
