Constitution Of the Beta Delta Chapter, Alpha Sigma Lambda Honor Society, University College, Syracuse University


Article I

Name and Purpose

Section 1.

The name of this organization shall be the Beta Delta chapter of Alpha Sigma Lambda, Honor Society, at University College of Syracuse University.

Section 2.

The purpose of the organization is to recognize and encourage superior scholarship among undergraduate students matriculated at University College, the Continuing Education Division of Syracuse University.

Section 3.

This society shall be a non-profit organization devoted to the advancement of scholarship.

Article II

Membership

Section 1.

The membership of the chapter shall consist of undergraduate, alumni, and honorary members.

a. Qualifications for undergraduate membership:

(1) Undergraduates must be currently enrolled matriculated students who have not been awarded any baccalaureate degree who have demonstrated outstanding scholarship and integrity of character.

(2) Undergraduates must have attended at least four semesters and have completed a minimum of 24 credit hours of which all were taken at Syracuse University, 12 of which must be in liberal arts or sciences.

(3) Members shall be elected only from the highest ten percent of the matriculated baccalaureate candidates in scholarship, provided however, that on a 4.0 scale, the minimum grade point index shall not fall below 3.2.

b. Qualifications for alumni membership:

(1) Members who have been elected as undergraduates may retain their membership as alumni upon receipt of their initiation fee (unless the fee has been waived) and will have all rights and privileges as regular members.

(2) Graduates who have completed at least thirty hours of their college work at University College must also meet the undergraduate standards for membership to be eligible for alumni membership. A maximum of five such persons may be elected to membership in any one college year. Interested alumni must signify their interest in membership by petitioning the local chapter.

c. Qualifications for honorary membership:

(1) Faculty and administrative membership: Faculty and administrative officers may be elected to membership provided the active number of such members at any time shall not exceed twenty or ten percent of the total membership of the chapter, whichever is larger.

(2) Honorary membership may also be extended to persons who have made significant contributions to continuing education.

(3) Honorary members shall not be required to pay dues.

Article III

Meetings

Section 1.

There shall be one regular business meeting, which may be held in the fall or spring semester or when convenient.

Section 2.

Additional regular meetings shall be held on call of the Executive Committee or on written request of six or more members.

Section 3.

The initiation of new members may be held in the spring and/or fall semesters.

Article IV

Officers and Duties

Section 1.

There shall be the following officers: President, Vice-President, Secretary, and Treasurer. These officers shall perform the duties appertaining to their respective offices.

Section 2.

The officers shall be elected for a one-year term of office by a majority vote of the honor society at the annual business meeting.

Section 3.

The moderator of the organization shall be appointed by the Dean of University College. The moderator shall act as a consultant on all matters of policy.

Section 4.

The Executive Committee, consisting of the officers and moderator, shall be responsible for managing the affairs of the chapter.

Article V

Finances

Section 1.

There shall be an initiation fee (which may be waived by the Executive Committee).

Section 2.

An audit of the treasurer’s books shall be made annually by a committee of three appointed by the President of the chapter. This committee shall make a report of its findings to the Executive Committee.

Article VI

Representative and Legislative Authority

Section 1.

The Association for Continuing Higher Education (A.C.H.E.) Institutional representative, or his/her deputy, shall be the Chapter’s National Councilor and the Chapter’s representative to the national convention.

Section 2.

Prior to each meeting, the President shall be responsible to submit a position paper to the representative for his/her guidance at the convention.

Article VII

Amendments

Section 1.

This constitution may be amended by a two-thirds vote of the members present at an approved meeting provided notice of such proposed amendment shall have been given in writing two weeks in advance to each voting member.

Section 2.

Prior to each meeting, the President shall be responsible to submit a position paper to the representative for his/her guidance at the convention.
