Traditional black and white darkroom techniques and processes.  Emphasis on camera operation, composition, darkroom technique, and creative expression.  Upon completion students should be able to successfully expose, develop, and print a well conceived composition.  Using their own 35mm film cameras to take photographs, students will develop printing techniques such as burning, dodging, the controls of density and contrast, and basic photo-finishing.  Must own 35mm manual camera.

As the most necessary of building forms, the dwelling house provides a fertile program for architectural invention. Tour nationally-recognized homes to explore how architectural form responds to—and constructs—ideas of gender, nature, technology, health.  One or two field trips (2-3 overnights; houses TBA) involving visits to modern houses enhance classroom discussion and form the basis of team projects. (Last summer we toured houses by Frank Lloyd Wright, Peter Eisenman, Russell Wright, and Philip Johnson.) Prerequisite: upper division or graduate standing; instructor consent.  An interdisciplinary student group sought: course introduces architectural subject matter to the non-specialist as well as to the architectural student.  Students bring their area interests to bear in discussions and on a team project.  Transportation (by van and private vehicles) and lodging will be arranged, but students are responsible for all costs for travel, museum fees, meals, and motel.

Survey of European architecture from the seventeenth to the nineteenth century. Transformations of architectural practice by the “scientific revolution"; transformation of geometry and measure and how these key elements of architectural ideation lost their transcendental value to become technical operators. Analysis of the impact of the scientific method on the received body of rules derived from antiquity and codified during the Renaissance as “vitruvianism”; collapse of the classical tradition during the Industrial Revolution. Consequences of these transformations on future practice through the notions of style, functionalism, historicism, and rationalism. Major architects, buildings, and architectural treatises from France, England, and Germany as well as other European countries.
