About Instructor:


Gary Spencer is the emeritus Chair of the Department of Sociology at Syracuse University. His research deals with the dynamics of prejudice and discrimination. He is interested in the social processes by which individuals and groups are dehumanized so that they can be treated as less than fully human. Professor Spencer is also actively engaged in national efforts to improve the quality of college teaching. He has won teaching and advising awards at Syracuse University. He has a B.A. in Sociology/Anthropology from Alfred University, and received his M.A. and Ph.D. in Sociology from Boston University. He won the Maxwell Professor of Teaching Excellence Award.
