Is Syracuse a safe place to live and study?
Yes, it’s
very safe. In fact, Rand McNally’s Places Rated Almanac
ranks us in the top 17% of surveyed US metropolitan areas
for safety and in the top 9% for overall quality of life.
Can I observe my religion?
Yes, you can. On campus are houses of worship and chaplains
serving members of many faiths including but not limited to
Islam, Judaism, Buddhism, and many denominations of Christianity.

What is there to do when I am not studying?
At Syracuse University
and in its surrounding community, you can visit venues featuring
sports, performing arts, rich history, and natural beauty.
Also, you can participate in a wide variety of
recreational, cultural,
and pre-professional
activities by joining one or more of Syracuse University’s
many student organizations.
The ELI has an active Student Council with elected student
representatives who serve their classmates by planning events
just for the ELI.
Will the ELI help me get into a degree program?
Yes, while
you are learning English here, the teachers adapt instruction
to your academic and career goals. For example, they will
help with university applications and write appropriate
recommendations.
