Need-based Financial Assistance
NOTE: Financial Aid for Flexible Format Classes Register early for flexible format classes if you wish to
receive financial aid! Students who expect to receive financial
aid must register by the add deadline of the standard term within
which the flexible format class is offered. Stafford loans for
students in flexible format classes that begin later within the
standard term may disburse on dates varying from those published
for the standard term. Therefore, refund processing may also be
affected. If you are anticipating the need for financial aid to
pay for a class that starts after the official start date of the
standard term, you should contact your UC Financial Aid Advisor
during early registration for information and assistance.

those returning after an absence of at least five years. Students
must complete 9-15 credits of their first two semesters at University
College with an overall GPA of 2.0 and a passing grade in all
courses. Students are then eligible for tuition grants covering
between 2.25 and 4.5 credits free in their next enrolled semester. Matriculation is not required. Students will be notified when they qualify. Click here for more details.

Non-need based Programs (Loans)
Unsubsidized Federal Stafford Loans: Student loans
are available to all students regardless of family income.
The Unsubsidized Federal Stafford Loan is designed for students
who do not qualify for subsidized student loans based on
sufficient financial need (but satisfy all other eligibility
criteria). The terms and conditions are the same as Subsidized
Federal Stafford Loans, except that the student must pay interest
on this loan during in-school and deferment periods. Additional
loan limits are available to independent students under this
program.
The Federal Plus Loan (FPLUS) is a loan for parents
of dependent undergraduate students and is not based on need.
A credit check is required. Parents may borrow up to the cost
of education not covered by financial assistance. Click here for application information and instructions.
Alternative or private, educational loans are
non-need based loans for students whose financial need is not met by federal loans, who are not matriculated,
are taking fewer than six credits, or enrolled in a certificate
program. Eligibility is determined by student's credit history.
Choosing a Lender
All
lenders are not alike. It pays to make an informed decision when choosing a lender. You will be entering into a long-term relationship with the lending institution. Reasons for selecting a particular lender vary from person to person. Some will choose a lender based on name/brand recognition or reputation. Others prefer established and timely processing. Still others are interested in borrower benefits in repayment, such as an interest rate reduction as a reward for making consecutive on-time payments. We encourage students to select the lender and loan product that best meets their needs. For more information, go to financialaid.syr.edu/loaninfo.htm.
Federal Veterans Administration Education Benefits: Students who are eligible for Veterans Administration
Education Benefits may apply to use them during
the semester. Benefits approved for use during the current semester are not continued for the next semester unless the student so
requests, and registration does not automatically activate your
benefits. Requests to use the benefits for the semester will
be accepted only after the student has officially registered
for that semester. Call (315) 443-3261 for veteran's information.
Click here for a pdf version of the VA Education Benefits Certification Request form.
VA Rehabilitation Benefits are administered between the student's VA counselor and the SU Bursar Office, 102 Archbold North.
