Flexible Course Formats

Flexible course formats give busy part-time students choices for taking courses at times and in formats that best fit their schedules. Courses are open to any part-time matriculated or non-matriculated student. Alternate formats available: Accelerated, Condensed, Online and Weekend College.

PLEASE NOTE:
See below for important registration and drop deadlines, and financial aid policies for flexible course formats.

During the summer a variety of course lengths and formats are available. MAYmester classes are avaiable during the last half of May, typically lasting one or two weeks. Each Summer Session is six weeks long. Online classes are available, typically lasting the twelve-week Combined Summer Session, but not requiring any on-campus class attendance. Accelerated, Condensed and Weekend College classes are not usually offered in summer.

Accelerated
Complete a course in seven weeks. Accelerated courses meet in the classroom for nine hours (Saturday and Sunday, 4.5 hours per day). Students complete the course from home over the remainder of the seven weeks, using various methods (online, e-mail, regular mail).

Condensed
Students take an entire course in a more concentrated time period. Classes may meet once a week for eight weeks, twice a week for seven weeks, or on the weekends. Classes meeting all day usually have a workshop, presentation, or performance emphasis that makes long class periods desirable.

Online
Take a course from your computer at home—no commuting necessary! They are conducted over the course of a semester. Online dialogue with the instructor and discussion with your classmates are integral parts of these courses. Students do not need to be computer experts, but basic computer skills are important; sending and receiving e-mail messages, posting to online discussion forums, "surfing" the web, and downloading files from a web site. Click HERE to view details on format, computer requirements and other class information.

Weekend College
Meet on campus for a three-day introduction to the course (four hours per day, per course). Attendance during this period is required. The rest of the course is completed from home by various methods (online, e-mail, regular mail), depending on instructor preference. Weekend College will meet September 12-14, 2008, with independent work until November 21, 2008.

Flexible Course Formats Special Information

Registration
Registration and drop deadlines associated with flexible courses do not follow the published deadline dates listed on this web site or in the Part-Time Course Schedule. Payment options are also unique to the start date and length of each class. Please call 315-443-4135 to speak to a Student Services Coordinator regarding the deadlines associated with your particular class.

Financial Aid
Register early for flexible format classes if you wish to receive financial aid. Students who expect to receive financial aid must register by the add deadline of the standard term within which the flexible format class is offered. Stafford loans for students in flexible format classes that begin later within the standard term may disburse on dates varying from those published for the standard term. Therefore, refund processing may also be affected. If you are anticipating the need for financial aid to pay for a class that starts after the official start date of the standard term, you should contact your UC Financial Aid Advisor during early registration for information and assistance.
